One-Way Song formed in Manchester in 2017. Operating as a collective rather than a traditional band, the name is taken from a poem by Wyndham Lewis — Britain’s ‘original rebel artist’.

An innocent axe to grind — the One-Way Song group

The One-Way Song story begins a few years earlier when two 18-year olds (Luke Gilfedder, Angus Macalister) forewent university to start a theatre group, writing & producing plays across the UK including at The Royal Exchange Manchester & on London’s West End, and even being based at an allegedly haunted theatre in Wilmslow on the estate of Sir Henry Boddington. But an idea to write songs for a future show soon snowballed into a wholly new project, hence ‘One-Way Song’.

The group took the fledgling project live on the Manchester circuit and shortly after recorded a selection of their live tracks for a debut release, entitled ‘Passionate Leave’. It was produced at Hilltown Studios in Colne by Keiron Melling (The Fall / Imperial Wax) and Mat Arnold (who has previously worked with artists as diverse as Tom Jones and Kanye West), who also play drums and guitar on the release respectively. The record features vocals from Angus Macalister, South African model Danielle Roseler & Jay Stansfield (a veteran of two Peel Sessions with tRANSELEMENt).

Discussing 1WS’ influences from Colin Wilson to Lou Reed

In November 2017, One-Way Song were honoured to debut the new songs at their biggest performance to date at the Imperial War Museum in Salford as part of its exhibition on Wyndham Lewis, incorporating video and theatre into the performance.

Following the successful November 2018 release of Passionate Leave, out on Hilltown Records, One-Way Song are gearing up for their debut LP Tyrolean Hat-trick. In April, they debuted new songs from the album at a headline show at Manchester’s legendary Night & Day.
