One iota’s 2019 Hackathon dates have been announced and we’d love for you to get involved!

Our 6th annual One iota Hackathon will be held on Thursday 20th & Friday 21st June this year.

During the event, the One iota team, and guests, will be working with some of the very latest technologies to design and build a number of innovative prototypes, with the objective of rolling the exciting new concepts out to our clients as part of future projects. We’ve organised a fantastic line up of judges from the retail & tech industries, and we’re aiming for even more community involvement at this year’s event.

Following the success of last year’s Hackathon, where a number of students were involved in the initiative, we’re keen to invite students based in the Manchester area to take part again this year. Our Hackathons are a great opportunity to get an insight into Manchester’s thriving tech industry, work closely with One iota’s experienced team of designers, developers and project managers and build your skill set.

If you’re passionate about tech and are looking to get into the industry, simply register your interest using our sign up form. The event will be held at The Sharp Project in Manchester over the course of two days, but don’t worry you will get to go home for a rest in between!

We’ll allocate you a team and provide refreshments on both days, all you need to bring is a laptop to work on and cover your travel expenses!

This year, the Hackathon theme is Personalising the ordinary, and Martin Korner, Head of Technology at One iota, explains the reason behind the theme “We’ve seen an explosion in all kinds of personalisation over the past couple of years due to a combination of things; consumers demanding a more tailored experience and AI and machine learning becoming more accessible. The days of a ‘one size fits all’ approach to retail are fading fast and consumers now expect a shopping journey tailored to their own taste, device, buying habits, location and purchase history.”

With Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services both offering a wide range of machine learning based services, it is now easier, quicker and cheaper to use the pool of data available to make applications more intelligent. These cloud services include visual search, recommendation, video & image analysis, as well as managed services for running custom deep learning algorithms for more specific purposes, again making them more accessible.

Over the course of the two days, teams will be given the opportunity to explore a number of different examples of Personalisation in the retail environment including;

  • Personalising the checkout journey based on the customer or their device
  • Personalising offers based on browsing habits — in-store and online?
  • Personalising how products are displayed/marketed online and in-store, based on the customer i.e. customer recognition in-store
  • Personalising physical products (adding name, own colours, own print etc) — https://retail-focus.co.uk/worlds-largest-primark-opens-in-birmingham/
  • Personalising the after sale journey with customers submitting photos of the products on them/in their house — https://www.made.com/sofasizer
