Derby Stars is an AAA-rated play-to-earn game, designed around the concepts of horse racing, raising, and breeding. The evidence was clear: The team successfully closed their seed funding round in 2022 with $6 million raised, led by Patron and Galaxy Interactive, accompanied by Hashed, a41 Ventures, and several notable angel investors, including representatives from Sandbox, Polygon Studios, and Google.
However, as they were originally phased to be built on Terra, the ill-fated implosion in May 2022 halted development, calling for an emergency pivot in networks. With over 10 leading blockchain foundations expressing interest in Derby Stars, the team ultimately decided on Polygon. Derby Stars continued to work tirelessly after to prepare itself to deliver to gamers with its highly polished graphics and incentivisation mechanisms, while also receiving the additional backing of Polygon Studios, which provided technical, PR, and marketing support to help them in their launch.

Each horse has a special skill which gets used at the final phase of the race; thus, horses like stretch runners and stalkers tend to have potential to do a big final push versus the front runners and runaway runners. The more races you win, the more your horse grows in value and prestige. You can also win $RUN tokens that can be spent on crafting and breeding. Strategy is particularly important in this game, as you will need to optimize decision-making and truly understand your horse’s synergies to win.
Horse Raising and Breeding: Players can also perform certain tasks and quests in-game to level up their horses and gain in-game tokens. You can earn CRT tokens in rewards, providing you with both an intrinsic and monetary benefit. Alternatively, go ahead and breed your horses. This provides a sort of Gatcha effect, where a combination of certain pairs can lead to your desired range of skill sets and talents.
If you don’t have a Derby Stars NFT, don’t fret. In efforts to mitigate a paywall effect, the team has introduced a unique rental feature that allows newcomers to play the game without having to purchase the NFTs upfront.
