The inception of the MATIC Militia can be traced back to the unique culture of the Polygon crypto community, long before their non-fungible token (NFT) collections gained popularity on OpenSea. Established in 2021, the MATIC Militia initially began as a Polygon-focused chat group on Twitter, quickly reaching the social platform’s group chat limit of 75 members. This community consisted of Polygon’s original investors, influencers, developers, and influential industry insiders who branded themselves as the #MATICMilitia.
When Twitter’s constraints resulted in the need for a broader platform, a secondary group, “The 2nd Battalion,” was created. This collective maintained a low profile while discussing leading industry technology for Polygon, yet also maintaining a covert and selective presence.
As Polygon advocates, their mission essentially revolves around educating newcomers and growing the community, while also sharing the latest cryptocurrency developments, including both Polygon-related advancements and the latest achievements of competing Layer-1 and Layer-2 solutions. United by the shared aspiration of learning together, they proudly identified themselves as the MATIC Militia.
How did the first 2 MATIC Militia collections first launch? 🚀
In January 2023, Spaceman Spliff <@DresDes1gn>, one of the group’s original members and a professional graphic designer, conceptualised artwork that embodied the essence of the Militia. He then minted the MATIC Militia — 1st Battalion collection on OpenSea that same month, offering them as profile pictures to the original members. All 84 pieces of this collection were airdropped to the first battalion of the MATIC Militia groups.
As the MATIC Militia members began to sport their new profile photos on Twitter, curiosity about the group spiked, and their reputation grew. I mean, look at them! They look amazing.
This interest shown by the community moved on to spark the creation of the ‘2nd Battalion NFT’ collection. It was the first public mint, launched with aims to broaden the MATIC Militia’s reach within the Polygon ecosystem.
Unlike the 1st Battalion collection, which was exclusively airdropped, the MATIC Militia — 2nd Battalion collection allowed the community to expand significantly. This expansion was facilitated by a comprehensive Discord server, enhancing interaction and collaboration within the community.
