A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for. — John A. Shedd

Today I learned that a coworker was no longer a coworker in a very 2017 fashion. I tried to share some with him on slack and his name didn’t autocomplete. I immediately checked to see if he was in the slack graveyard, but I already knew the answer. While I am sad to see him go, I am happy for him overall. And after reading this quote, I know why. He is the ship.

When I first met Julian over two years ago, I was immediately impressed with his work. Especially for someone so early in their career. He had folders and folders of designs and redesigns. And while we only implemented a few of them, most other startups would kill to have those designs just sitting in a folder.

Over the subsequent years, I had the privilege of working with Julian on multiple projects. And he always delivered. Sure he might have missed a few things here or there, but he was always willing to listen and adapt. This trait is what sets him apart from most of the other designers that I have worked with in the past.

Over the years Julian has been building his ship in the not so calm waters of Social Tables harbor. If it’ll float there, it’ll float anywhere. But now he going out on the open ocean. And sure, maybe the ship isn’t 100% finished, but it is definitely seaworthy. So weigh anchor and set sail.

Bon Voyage
