One Team Gov’s Global Online Workshop: Exploring Future Leadership

On 11 and 12 February 2020, One Team Gov is convening its first online global workshop focused on exploring future leadership. We’re running this during the Fire Starter Festival 2020 celebrating creativity and innovation in Public Services.

This workshop builds on, and is inspired by, the work already done this year on exploring future leadership. One Team Gov want to find space to talk about different leadership models — radical new ways to lead, underpinned by empathy, vulnerability, and collaboration. Leadership happens everywhere all the time; we believe it is a mindset, that everyone has an insight on leadership.

We want to connect different people to think about alternative ways to lead, strengthen our collective ability to lead and be led, and show the power in the collective. This needs a fundamental mindset shift, which is why we’re convening a global community, giving them the time and space to think how best to work collectively.

Why is One Team Gov holding a online leadership workshop?

One Team Gov was founded with a desire to support government to become more effective, by connecting people and taking practical action. Improving public sector leadership is one of One Team Gov’s three goals for 2020. We’ve written five blog posts about our journey so far in exploring future leadership here.

We believe in the power of things we can get done when we do it together. That why, together, we will explore what a leadership of the future looks like.

We will bring together people who are leaders and people who want to expand their leadership capability across government to explore the sorts of leadership we need today and into the future.

The format

We start with the One Team Gov principles, in particular, being diverse and inclusive and working in the open and positively.

The event will “follow the sun”, meaning there will be three online events happening around the world across a 24 hour period, starting in Australia and New Zealand on 11 February 2020, followed by Canada on the same day, and ending in UK/Europe on 12 February 2020.

We will follow a workshop format used by Nour Sidawi and Jason Brewster in real life workshops. That is, one speaker talking about a topic, sharing space reflecting on the topic, then shared discussion and collaboration about that topic, and then a final reflection — both as a group and as individuals. You can read about these workshops here:

What will happen on the day

Our discovery question for the day is…

“Leadership for what?”

We aim to bring people together in an online space so that:

  • People who wouldn’t normally have access to such an event can attend
  • We can bring leaders together from around the world who might not otherwise be connected to their peers in other agencies and countries

We will explore what leadership looks like in the future across three themes:

  • Leadership of Self — Yourself
  • Leading with Others — Team / Organisation
  • Leading in the Wider Circle — System / Community

These are the leadership spheres we want participants to think in, concentric circles expanding away from yourself.

We will be open about what we discussed during the day and what we created. It will be open and community-owned.

Interested? Next steps…

  • If you want to attend, save the date, Tuesday 11th February 2020 or Wednesday 12th February 2020 (depending on your timezone!), in your diary 📅.
