Active Listening: Here’s how to master it to succeed at university
Improve your listening skills today by following these top tips during your lectures.
85% of our learning is derived from listening. Listening is a vital literacy skill that helps us to make sense of the world. Despite this, it is rarely taught at schools resulting in university students being unprepared for their studies.
Listening Skills to Succeed at University is a new 2-week online course designed to support all university students to understand the importance of active listening and teach them practical strategies to help them improve their listening skills in an academic setting.
When listening we are distracted, forgetful and even preoccupied for 75% of that time, remembering less than 20% of what we have heard an hour later. This course will help you understand listening as an interactive process and show you a model of academic listening that will help you to listen effectively at university.
So, what are the top tips to keep you focused during lectures?
- Make notes
- Identify the main points
- Link key points to your own experience, other examples, or other facts
The course goes beyond the technical aspects of listening to explore the impact of cultural diversity present in universities and the different listening skills required by different disciplines. Learners joining the Listening Skills to Succeed at University online course will also get to practice their listening skills through interactive activities.
By the end of the course, you’ll have developed strategies that support effective listening, so you’ll be more prepared to listen successfully whilst at university and later in life.
