In 2023, the theme is #BeatPlasticPollution, showcasing how countries, businesses and individuals can use plastic more sustainably in the hope that one day, plastic pollution will be a thing of the past.

The need to prioritise sustainability and reduce our plastic use has become more crucial than ever.

The main goal of World Environment Day is to inspire individuals to take action in their daily lives. Even small changes can contribute to significant positive outcomes. Whether it’s reducing personal carbon footprints, adopting sustainable consumption habits, conserving water, or minimising waste generation, individuals have the power to make a difference. Governments, businesses, and organisations are also urged to play their part by adopting environmentally friendly practices and policies, promoting renewable energy, and investing in sustainable development.

How will you be celebrating World Environment Day this year? Here are our top tips to help you get started:

  1. Reduce, reuse, and recycle: Promote the concept of the ‘3 Rs’ in your community, family, and workplace. Encourage people to reduce consumption, reuse items whenever possible, and properly recycle waste materials.
  2. Organise a local litter pick: Gather your friends, family, or neighbours and organise a cleanup event in your neighbourhood or a nearby park or other green space. Remove litter and plastic waste and encourage others to help to keep the environment clean.
  3. Organise an eco-friendly event: If you plan an event at work or home to celebrate World Environment Day, make it eco-friendly. Use sustainable materials, minimise waste, encourage carpooling or public transportation, and provide recycling bins.
  4. Support local and sustainable businesses: Encourage people to support businesses prioritising sustainability. Promote eco-friendly products, locally sourced goods, and businesses that minimise their environmental impact.
  5. Take an online course with the University of Leeds and learn more about climate change and how to tackle it!
