Have you ever wondered how many new malicious programs are actually being registered on the internet each year?

Well, now that 2018 is coming to an end, we decided to share these statistics with our community, so you can be informed and aware of the constant threats that aim to infect your computer.

Every day, the AV-TEST Institute registers over 350,000 new malware and potentially unwanted applications. Yes, you heard that right! Every single day!

This software is examined and classified according to their characteristics so they can generate the current malware statistics. Let’s take a look!

AV-TEST Malware Statistics for 2018

Over 10 million new malicious programs are being registered each month. This means that we are bound to be exposed to any of them while we are browsing through our favorite websites.

It’s shocking to see such a constant growth from month to month. The charts show a considerable increase over last year’s 719.15 million, which leaves us in a very concerning situation.

Mobile Threats

Let’s take a look at the data regarding mobile cyber attacks. For this information, we consulted the Kaspersky Lab Malware Reports for Q3 of 2018.

One of the biggest news regarding this period was the Trojan-Banker.AndroidOS.Asacub epidemic. What happened? More than 250,000 unique users were attacked by this malware application.

Number of users attacked by the mobile banker Asacub in 2017 and 2018

“The scale of the attack involving Asacub by far surpasses the largest attacks we have previously observed while monitoring mobile threats. The Trojan’s versions have sequential version numbers, suggesting the attacks were launched by just one threat actor. It’s impossible to count the total number of affected users, but it would need to be in the tens of thousands to make such a massive malicious campaign profitable.” (Kapersky Lab 2018)
