Ask An Expert: Eating for Beauty— Skin Food

At Onomie, we believe beauty starts on the inside– and the truth is, often our diets can have an even greater impact on our skin than our products. We sat down with Maria Marlowe, creator of EatBeauty, a meal planning program that helps clear up acne naturally through diet and lifestyle changes, to get the skinny on eating for your skin. Maria’s super healthy (and creative!) recipes are not only delicious, but include nutrients, vitamins and minerals that help create clear, blemish-free, and even wrinkle-resistant, skin from the inside out.

Seeds, Please!

Seeds of all sorts can provide a major boost to your daily meals, and it’s as simple as sprinkling them on your salad, oatmeal, morning smoothie, or even just snacking on them by the handful. Maria recommends adding hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds and flaxseeds to your diet. They all contain Omega-3s, an anti-inflammatory nutrient that reduces the redness and swelling of blemishes, speeds up healing, and prevents the formation of fine lines. Hemp seeds also contain a massive amount of protein, including the sulfur-bearing amino acids that help build strong hair, nails, and skin, and pumpkin seeds contain Zinc, which works as an antioxidant.

Tall, Dark and Leafy

Dark leafy greens are nature’s multivitamin, so it’s no surprise that they contain the very nutrients your skin craves. They’re off-the-charts in Vitamin A, which prevents blemishes, and Vitamin C, which is reduces fine lines (both of which are found in Onomie’s A.C.E. Illuminating Eye Treatment). Greens are also a good source of sulfur, which plays a key role in a clear complexion. When it comes to greens, the darker, the better. Maria’s faves include are kale and arugula, but Swiss chard, collard greens, watercress and spinach are great choices, too.

You Look Radishing, Darling

Radishes not only provide a satisfying and peppery crunch, but they also contain minerals and compounds that benefit the skin, including sulfur, silicon, and Vitamin C. These nutrients work together to create bright, glowing skin by boosting collagen, strengthening the skin and stimulating the circulatory system (much like Onomie’s Bright Concealing Elixir). Slice radishes into salads or pair them with a healthy dip like guacamole or olive tapenade as a snack.

Guac and Roll

Avocado is not only creamy and addictive, but it’s also a great source of biotin, which keeps skin supple, and healthy fats that are highly anti-inflammatory to prevent blemishes and keep wrinkles at bay. Enjoy avocado as guacamole, sliced over a salad, or mashed onto toast– just keep it to a half per serving.
