While you’re probably aware that natural has become a buzzword in the beauty world, but do you know which ingredients are really being used in your fave products? Are they safely (and effectively) taking care of your skin?

We did the dirty work to give you the facts behind ingredient lists, and couldn’t overlook one of the biggest questions our customers have. “Natural” products are loosely regulated, and so a brand can label or market a product as such when the ingredients might be far from natural, and downright harmful. It’s not well-known that synthetic ingredients are less biologically complex and generally are less allergenic, meaning the risk of an unplanned breakout is slim. Any ingredient that aggravates the skin will cause it to break down, making it difficult for skin to protect itself from environmental damage. Plus- natural ingredients are also more difficult to preserve against contamination and growth than synthetic, which leads us into another crucial detail: preservatives!

Many skin-safe, non-toxic preservatives have gotten a bad rap, but would you want to apply a rancid product to your skin? Onomie uses safe preservatives, at safe levels, to ensure the actives in our products are well situated in the formula and stay potent. This means you can use the formulas for a full use period (up to 12 months for our Powerful Priming Serum!). To avoid harmful preservatives when shopping for skincare, be sure to avoid anything ending in -paraben, -methyl, -ethyl, -propyl, -butyl, -isobutyl, or any variation of hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxybenzoate, or ester. Stay smart, beauty nerds!
