I recently had the opportunity to compete at the Utah State Sporting Clays Championship. It was held in sunny Hurricane, UT. Just north of St. George. It was a great tournament with about 160 shooters there. While there, I wanted to create a quick training video for you on the topic of flow, or getting in the zone.

For athletes, artists, competitors, business owners, entrepreneurs, and your everyday average Joe, the zone or flow as its called is the coveted state in which high performance lives. Entering the zone in a particular area of life ultimately gets one into a state in which the mind opens up and allows the body to simply perform at its best ability.

Getting into the zone is something that is often talked about, however, seldom accomplished. Only a select few elites in the world have mastered getting into it. The beauty of flow is that you have full capacity of your mind. The subconscious skills you’ve trained and practiced come out uninhibited by conscious thought.

“Conscious thought is the greatest hindrance to proper execution of all physical action.” — Bruce Lee

When you get into the flow, time slows, you feel extremely present with the moment. If you’re giving a speech, riding a board, shooting a shotgun, pistol, or rifle, etc. You have the ability to become one with whatever you’re doing. The board, the firearm, your audience, becomes a part of you and you a part of it.

While I realize this may sound a bit hokey, the research and examples show us that it’s real. Famous skateboarder, Danny Way, showed the power of flow in his world record feat of jumping over 70 feet on a skateboard to clear the Great Wall of China. The day before Danny’s attempt at jumping the wall on a practice run, Danny broke his ankle. Refusing an X-ray and simply taping up his ankle, he made the attempt the next day. Succeeding and even performing the jump several times.

Everything he trained for led him to that moment, and flow allowed him to perform in that moment. In the video I talk about how important training and preparing to enter the zone is. We will talk more in the future about how to get in the zone. Today I simply want to impress upon you how important it is that we prepare for getting into flow and some ways that we can do that.
