Editor’s note: On July 1, 2018 the Open Government Office joined the Ontario Digital Service. Our Chief Digital Officer often quotes Pia Andrews: “open government without digital doesn’t scale, and digital government without open doesn’t last”. So we’ll be sharing more about how the Open Government Office is working to make Ontario open and transparent.

Our team is all about working in the open, wherever possible. A core part of working in the open is using data to measure, learn and make decisions. “Use the data” is even one of the digital leadership principles.

Registration is now open for this year’s Go Open Data Conference (GOOD). GOOD is a community-driven annual conference about open data with an Ontario focus. This year the conference will be at the bright and beautiful Toronto Reference Library.

Shameless plug: we want to tell you all about the conference and encourage you to join us there!

The theme at this year’s conference is “Inclusive, Equitable & Impactful”. It’s an opportunity to explore how open data, and open data activities, can be expanded and adapted to include all who would like to participate, while having the greatest-possible impact on people, communities, and businesses.

Here are the important details:

Date: May 3–4th, 2019

Place: Toronto Reference Library

Time: 8:00 am — 5:00 pm (May 3), 9:00 am — 5:00 pm (May 4)

2019 Go Open Data Conference

The conference starts on Friday May 3rd, and ends with a hackathon on Saturday, May 4th. There will also be pre-conference workshops on Thursday, May 2nd.

On Friday, panelists at the keynote will discuss the conference theme: Open — Inclusive, Equitable, Ethical and Impactful. The panel will feature:

  • Teresa Scassa, Canada Research Chair in Information Law and Policy, University of Ottawa
  • Jonathan Dewar, Executive Director, First Nations Information Governance Centre
  • Tracy Lauriault, Assistant Professor of Critical Media and Big Data, Carleton University

Co-create with the Ontario Digital Service

People from the Ontario Digital Service are helping to steer the event. We’ll be at the conference and are hoping to engage with you!

On Thursday, May 2nd at a pre-conference workshop, we will co-create, brainstorm and prioritize updates and enhancements to a number of our Open Government work projects and priorities. We will also deliver an Open Data 101 presentation for attendees who are not yet familiar with the initiative.

On Saturday, May 4th, at the hackathon portion of the event, we’ll provide an opportunity to co-create a first draft of principles around using and disclosing algorithms in Ontario. There will also be a data visualization and analytics introduction provided by Tableau.
