Editor’s Note: Code for Canada’s inaugural Summit is coming to Toronto March 10–11. Ontario has been a strong supporter of Code for Canada’s with its mission to connect government innovators with the tech and design community, so they can deliver better services — and outcomes — for residents.

We’ve asked Luke Simcoe, Code for Canada’s Director of Outreach, to share a few words on what’s in store for their first-ever event.

Are you striving to put users at the centre of your services? Are you trying to be agile, not just do agile. Are you moving your work and your people into the open? Are you trying to break down siloes and collaborate across sectors, disciplines and departments?

If so, the upcoming Code for Canada Summit is for you.

Our inaugural summit is bringing practitioners from Canada’s civic tech and digital government movement together in Toronto on March 10–11, 2020. It’s a chance for those working at the intersection of technology and the public interest to get together, share their work (and show the thing!) and take tangible learnings back to their teams.

Here are the details:

Date: March 10–11, 2020
Place: Artscape Daniels Launchpad (130 Queens Quay East)
Time: 5:00 p.m. — 9:00 p.m. (March 10), 8:30 am — 5:00 pm (March 11)
Tickets: Discounted tickets for public servants are available now

About Code for Canada

Code for Canada is a national nonprofit, formed in 2017, that’s working to build digital capacity in government, and civic capacity in the tech and design community. We offer a variety of programs, from a fellowship that embeds tech and design professionals in the public service, to a new inclusive usability testing service.

The Government of Ontario is a founding partner of Code for Canada, and the organization has placed fellows with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

A conference for (and by) practitioners

Check your buzzwords at the door; the Code for Canada Summit is a place to talk about what’s happening on the ground. It’s a place to connect with your peers from across the country who may be struggling with the same challenges. And it’s a place for honest and open conversation about what’s working in digital government, what’s not working, and where we need to go next.

All of the content at the Summit is grounded in case studies of real projects, and geared towards practitioners — those doing the complex, challenging and truly human work of digital transformation.

Ontario on stage

Members of the Ontario Public Service will be on stage at the Summit, sharing some of the exciting digital work underway at Queen’s Park.

  • Katy Lalonde (Director at the Ontario Digital Service) will be part of a case study panel on making the case for funding in digital government.
  • Sameer Vasta (Lead, Employee Experience at the Ontario Digital Service) will be participating in a case study panel on new models for talent acquisition and retention.
  • Laura Nelson-Hamilton (Senior Policy Advisor at the Ontario Digital Service) will be co-facilitating a workshop on improving monitoring and evaluation practices in digital government.

Four reasons you should go to the #C4CSummit

Gain a national perspective

There are over 40 speakers at the Code for Canada Summit, representing digital government and civic tech work happening coast to coast to coast, from Fredericton to Ottawa, Toronto to Calgary, and Vancouver to Whitehorse.

See the Code for Canada fellows in action

Code for Canada’s fellowship program embeds technology and professionals inside government, where they bring the tools and processes of digital to bear on important public sector challenges. The fellows will be centre stage at the Summit, sharing the products and services they’ve developed in collaboration with their government partners.

Level up your skills

In addition to a plethora of panels, the Code for Canada Summit features a number of exciting workshops and convenings. Attendees at the Summit will get to learn about topics like decolonizing digital, improving monitoring and evaluation practices, communicating in the open, and building agile procurement contracts.

Find your people

You’re not alone! At the Code for Canada Summit, you’ll engage with public servants, advocates, entrepreneurs, technologists, and others who share your goals and want to collaborate.

We hope you’ll join us!

The whole Code for Canada team will be on hand at the Summit, and we’re excited to connect with digitally-savvy (and digitally-curious) public servants from Ontario! Together, we can show what’s possible and lower the barrier to change.

You can register for the 2020 Summit here; we’re offering a special discounted rate for public servants of only $350. You can also learn more about the event by subscribing to the Code for Canada newsletter, or by following us on Twitter.

See you in March!
