ENERGY SPEECH IGNITES DEBATE

In his first speech as Minister for Energy, the Hon Angus Taylor MP reiterated the Government’s intention of curbing electricity prices but failed to mention reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Minister stated:

“There will be no ideology in what I do… my goal, the goal of my department and the goal of the electricity sector must be simple and unambiguous — get prices down while keeping the lights on”.

Labor’s Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the Hon Mark Butler MP stated:

“Well I think it’s confirmed our worst fears, which is that the Morrison Government intends to place its anti-renewables ideology ahead of good policy, it’s abandoned the idea of putting in place a bipartisan policy framework that will deliver the policy certainty that every single body that advises government on this area has said is needed over the last couple of years. Indeed, Angus Taylor went even further than abandoning it, he said he wouldn’t even try to deliver policy certainty.”
