Found Money

Did you know that there are unclaimed funds in financial institutions or companies that have had no activity generated or contact with the owner for a year or longer? The money may be found in forgotten savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed utility security deposits, or IRS refunds.

You can search on the websites www.missingmoney.com and www.unclaimed.org which are both endorsed by National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) to find money not claimed yet nation-wide. If you are the rightful heir of someone who has died, you can search to see if there is any unclaimed money or property in their name.

You can also check the treasury website for the state you live in and any other states where you have lived in the past for unclaimed money or property. When doing the search, make sure to type in all the places you have lived. If you are married, check under your maiden name as well.

Search www.irs.gov for any possible refund money from the Internal Revenue Service.

To search for any unclaimed pension money, go to www.pbgc.gov/search-unclaimed-pensions

For any potentially unclaimed life insurance claims or payments, check your individual insurer’s website.

Companies may offer to find this money for a fee. Scammers may try to trick you with false promises of money from the government. Keep in mind you can find any unclaimed money yourself for free and without using a third party.
