What is tempeh? Tempeh is fermented soybeans that are bound into a loaf. It’s a derivative from Indonesia, but many Asian countries still use it. Tempeh is a Non-GMO soy product that is jam-packed with protein. Not only is it a good meat alternative, it can be added to smoothies or desserts. How cool is that?

What’s the difference between Tempeh and Tofu?

Tofu is way more popular than tempeh but tempeh should not be slept on. Tempeh is less processed than tofu. Yes, tempeh has more calories than tofu, but tempeh contains 20g of protein per serving. Tempeh is also a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6 and iron. Tempeh has an earthy, sweet taste. Tempeh is just better for you overall. Choose tempeh today! I bought my tempeh from Trader Joe’s, but you can find it in your local grocery store.

Now, let’s get into this recipe.

Tempeh is all about how you make it. I suggest taking that extra 25 minutes for prep time to ensure your tempeh comes out how you want it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package organic tempeh
  • 1 tbsp olive or coconut oil (I used olive oil)

Tempeh Marinade:

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (gf)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp sriracha
  • 1 tsp rice wine
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp corn starch
  • 1/4 tsp liquid smoke (natural hickory flavor)
  • 1/2 tsp of ground black pepper

Toppings

Liquid Smoke not pictured. Can be found in your local grocery store.

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients for marinade into bowl and whisk together.
  2. Place tempeh into dish and pour marinade over. Marinate for at least 20 mins.
  3. Place olive or coconut oil in a pan and sear the tempeh 3–5 minutes on each side until crispy.
  4. Mix teriyaki sauce ingredients in large bowl.
  5. Once tempeh is cooked, add tempeh to teriyaki sauce, covering the tempeh.
  6. Take tempeh out of the sauce (leaving the extra sauce in the bowl) and add back to pan.
  7. Heat tempeh again for about 30 seconds on each side to caramelized the sauce on the tempeh.
  8. Turn off heat and pour the remaining sauce over the tempeh in the pan. Leave for about a minute for the rest of the sauce to thicken a bit.
  9. Serve and top with sesame seeds.

You can serve this with jasmine rice (my fav) or brown rice. I added some veggies from a previous meal to make it a more balanced meal for me. I added the veggies at the end and tossed it in the sauce to incorporate the flavors.

This is the best meal I have ever made. I will be making this again very soon. The only thing I would suggest is double the portions as you see fit. Like I’ve said before, I am a seasoning connoisseur, so I like to add to my liking.

I hope you enjoy this meal as much as I did.
