We began our journey with the goal of creating the first sustainable model for a dispersed network of bike parking & service stations across cities. The demand for this infrastructure has always been clear; cyclists need secure and weather protected parking facilities in order to prevent bike theft. Cars have parking lots, why shouldn’t bicycles?

The framework for designing, financing, and implementing secure bike parking facilities, however, has always been a bit more fuzzy. Where would this infrastructure be installed? What would it look like? What would the user interface entail? Who would pay for it?

With Oonee, we sought to finally answer all of these questions.

We’ve embarked on an ongoing collaboration with policymakers, cycling advocates, architects, and security experts to design a thoughtful solution that works in the most challenging of urban environments.

The Water-Whitehall Oonee incorporated greenery and seating in order to blend into the urban fabric.

The Atlantic Terminal kiosk, slated to launch by the end of the month, will represent our most ambitious effort yet. With this installation, we’re thinking beyond bike parking by introducing new service features that will please pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Enhanced Lighting: We’ve included upgraded interior lights, which activate at dusk. These new LEDs are more than 100% brighter than those found at our Water-Whitehall and Journal Square installations.

E-bike Charging Stations: We’ve included interior charging outlets for powered bikes and scooters.

Air Pump: An air pump will be available on the interior of the kiosk for riders who need a tire pressure boost.

Exterior Cell Phone Charging: The kiosk’s exterior will offer public USB charging stations for mobile phones and other devices.

Base Planters: Our installations already come with lush plantings on the roof, but we’re taking it to the next level at Atlantic Terminal. The kiosk will be accompanied by six planters (three on each side) that will provide even more greenery to the streetscape.

Exterior Ambient Lighting: The breezeway between the kiosk and main building will be illuminated by the interior lights (via the side window) as well as several ground level lighting fixtures.

Irrigated Roof: The kiosk’s rooftop plantings will be a bit greener thanks to our new energy efficient irrigation system. In addition to recycling rain-water, this watering tool will help decrease the manpower required to keep the kiosk looking beautiful.

Over the weekend the Atlantic Terminal kiosk was disassembled and prepared for transport
Each modular kiosk is can be disassembled and transported. This gives the infrastructure a substantial degree of flexibility
The kiosk doors, along with other components are stacked together during transport — these components will eventually become part of the Atlantic Terminal installation.

The Bigger Picture

We are hoping that this new installation will eventually serve as a model for a dense network of similar facilities across New York. By removing the key pain-point of lack of secure parking, we can create a more welcoming environment for cyclists and accelerate the bike & scooter revolution throughout the metropolitan area.
