Logs on Linux: The logging daemon rsyslog — Cheat sheet Linux

In this story, we will see how works the rsyslog logging daemon on Linux hosts.

rsyslogd is the logging daemon. It send the output to a text file. Its configuration file is /etc/rsyslog.conf.

The RULES section describes the rules applied when certain messages arrive in the log:

  • emails go to /var/log/maillog,
  • the rest goes in /var/log/messages.
