What is Open Door Security?
You’re probably wondering, “Cedric, why did you start a blog? What is this?”
I’ve long been a lurker on LinkedIn where I’m connected with a bunch of startup and security folks. I often like to read posts related to Security and AppSec while out waiting in line or when I have some downtime during lunch. Sometimes I think it’s just too convenient.
After all, haven’t we’ve all fallen victim to doom scrolling? For some reason, my mind justifies reading posts vaguely related to tech versus recycled Facebook memes.
While easy to read, short form content lacks important context that helps thorough understanding of topics. Scrolling small bits of content also gives a more immediate dopamine rush, throwing our attention/reward balance out of whack.
Compounding the above, the field of Security is hard to understand, especially for those getting started. Places like LinkedIn and X can contain misinformation or devolve into arguments in the argument that detract from the original point of value.
Although still very early on in my career, I’ve had the chance to be in several different security and engineering roles. It’s become apparent security is a broad, ambiguous-to-define overarching responsibility that even the best cert-stacker can’t fully grapple. Questions arise, like:
- Why does a Product security engineer need to know the nitty gritty compliance reporting requirements for FedRAMP?
- Why must an Infrastructure security engineer have a strong background in web app system design?
- I’m just a software engineer — why do I need to patch vulnerabilities?
I’m establishing a long form blog— to paint security from an outside lens and share insights for experienced practitioners.
No promises on the exact type of content to come, but I’m going for variety to start. I’m an engineer by heart, so hope to post deep dives and Github links to open source creations. Some topics that you may see:
- AI Security
- Red team exercises
- Platform walkthroughs of vendors
- How-to-guides
If you know me and want to write an article for Open Door, just reach out! This mission is a collaborative space where we can share a bunch of ideas.
For those looking to enter the field, I say: just start somewhere. The effort of action is worth 100x the discussion of it. For many, this is a start in support building valuable soft skills but can vary depending on your past experience.
