On Wednesday, July 22, members of the Digital Public Library of America’s Rights Statements Working Group held a webinar on the topic of "Standardized Rights Statements 101". The full webinar recording can be viewed below:

Rights Statements 101, presented by the DPLA Rights Statements Working Group, on July 22, 2020.

Presenters for this webinar were:

  • Greg Cram (New York Public Library)
  • Gabe Galson (Temple University)
  • Wendy Gogel (Harvard University)
  • Molly Huber (University of Minnesota)
  • Julia Simic (University of Oregon)
  • Shaneé Yvette Murrain, facilitator (DPLA)

The webinar began by introducing attendees to the standardized rights statements available through RightsStatements.org. These statements are a simple, standardized system of labels that more clearly communicate the copyright and re-use status of digital objects to the public, which improves usability and access for users. This increased accessibility is a clear benefit of implementation, as is enhanced discovery and greater ease of meaningful aggregation and collaborative projects, which was discussed by the speakers.

Presenters also explored various tools and resources available to those seeking to implement rights statements for their collections, which have been brought together into a searchable database and made available by the Rights Statements Working Group through a website they’ve built, The Rights Portal (https://rights-portal.dp.la/). The site features a facet-able and searchable resources list, and a community connections page describing how to get in touch with the Working Group, and how to join their copyright-focused listserv. Finally, the group addressed some of the challenges of implementation for those just starting out, and considerations to keep in mind, such as need for stakeholder buy in, tolerance for risk, and technical challenges. The webinar was then opened up for questions from attendees.

DPLA's Rights Statements Working Group has launched a new Rights Portal with resources for GLAMs.

If you would like to view this webinar on rights statements and their implementation, a recording of this session has been published by DPLA. A copy of slides from the event is also available. DPLA maintains an archive of all past webinars and anyone interested in future webinars or other DPLA news can subscribe to its mailing list.

This blog post was contributed by Molly Huber, who is the Outreach Coordinator for the Minnesota Digital Library and Co-Chair of the DPLA Rights Statements Working Group.
