Stop Creating Nuclear Devices — Open Letter

Dear people of the earth,

An atomic bomb, an explosive device that can kill millions. Why create them when the only thing they can do is just killing innocent people, not only humans but possibly also other living things and environment. I am here to tell the story that my family had to suffer during the Hiroshima bombing on August 6th, 1945 which still affected our life today.

Even though this event has happened a long long time ago, there are so many countries still try to build them eg. North Korea, Iran. I don’t think people really cared about the situation people in Japan was going through. For people who cared and helped I want to say thank you for supporting our country. I want everyone to understand how atomic bombs impact lives. We all should stay firm in boycotting countries who try to build an Atomic bomb. Dropping bombs in any countries for any good reason is not acceptable. We need to change the world perception in dealing with conflicts.

In the final stages of the World War II, the United States detonated two atomic nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and August 9th, 1945. The two bombings killed at least 129,000 people, Most of them were civilians. In Hiroshima on the day of the bombing, my family was preparing for breakfast, my great grandmother was cooking for the family that day as she was about to pick up the plates as she saw planes flying over. About 30 seconds later an atomic bomb was dropped from the plane and detonated, 20,000 soldiers and at least 70,000 civilians were killed. My family was one of the 70,000 civilians that were killed. As my mom was telling me the story I started to see tears dripping downs from her eyes. How would you feel if people in your family had to die just because of an irrational war that people couldn’t agree and solve peacefully. My family and thousands of other families in Japan had to go through enormous pains from their losses while other people were just celebrating their victory without caring about anything else other than winning victory. How can people be so cruel thinking of creating more atomic nuclear weapons even though they know all the dreadful outcomes consequences. You drop bombs just to win one war hundred thousands of people have to die. Millions of family members had to suffer because of these actions. Eventually, in the end, you celebrate your victory while one country was totally destroyed and suffer. Nobody could move on with their lives and you just simply forgot everything you have done.

Till today many countries are still creating atomic bombs to mostly threaten other countries. We don’t know whether they are going to detonate and drop bombs to start a war. Not only does atomic bombs impact people but it also impacts the environment. One of the most important reasons not to create an atomic bomb is that it can affect the environment and in a really worse way. Atomic bombs are a lethal weapon that can cause violent and strong explosions when energy is released it cause the uranium or plutonium atoms to split. Once detonated the atomic bomb produces a shockwave, fireball and intense radiation after it explodes a big mushroom cloud filled with smoke and water forms. The mushroom cloud then forms vaporized waste that falls to earth contaminating and destroying the air, soil, water, and food supply. These waste could be carried by wind currents and the fallout can spread around causing environmental damage. Destroying the environment is a huge problem and detonate atomic bombs that will even affect the environment even more. It creates a fireball and an intense amount of crushing wind comes up caused by the initial blast destroys buildings and trees in its path. The immediate effect on the environment is total devastation. The outrageous heat of thermal radiation burns everything that is in its way, including animals, trees, buildings, and people. Many of those who did not die from radiation or burns later developed cancers from the radiation. So many things can die just from one atomic bombing, yet so many people still want to create bombs and not care about the impacts or consequences. Nuclear weapons are not needed, and have not been, for years. While nuclear weapons have influenced politics, public opinion, and defense budget, they have not had a significant impact on the environment but also people and lots of other things. Nor have they been crucial assets in the cold war developments, alliance patterns, or the way the major world powers have acted in times of crisis. The main question is, would there actually have been another world war if these weapons did not exist?

August 6th, 1945, 90,000 lives were ended in a matter of seconds. The Hiroshima bombing has continued to shape our thinking about wars and bombs till today. The damage caused along with the extreme implications that followed, explains why it is so well known. If enough nuclear weapons were exploded in a large-scale nuclear war, vast areas of the earth would become uninhabitable. It was really hard for me to write this letter since my family was one of the people who had to suffer and went through the severe pain. It’s not acceptable to kill people freely by simply go dropping bombs in other countries. I don’t understand why people even invented bombs in the first place even though they knew all the negative impacts that could happen to human being, earth and all species living in it. I find it is truly insane for someone or countries to support atomic bombs. Do we really want to lose our beautiful earth just by an explosive device? Can we think of any constructive ways to solve conflicts and to stay in peace?

Yours sincerely,

A person whose family was killed by a bombing
