An Open Letter To Emerging Writers
Mediocre insights and marginally useful thoughts from someone who knows the frustrations that accompany being almost famous
Dear Emerging Writers,
Let me begin by saying that being an “emerging writer” is very different from being an a) aspiring writer, b) amateur published writer, and c) financially successful writer. You, the emerging writer, are in a unique, oft misunderstood, category of your own — and in my humble opinion have the most to offer in terms of your unrealized potential and gifts you will give to humanity.
I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about, but on the off-chance that you’re not up to speed, I’ll do my best to clarify. Because sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what you are (and why you matter) without having all the context for what you are not.
Aspiring writers never really pick up the pen. Sure, they dream about it, talk about it, write blogs about it, and even join writing groups. They, as the definition of aspiring aptly puts, “hope to become.” But as we all know, hoping to become anything without action is the equivalent of doing nothing: it is the perpetual student who never holds a job; the weird adult who walks around in a clown suit but never…
