Living through a pandemic is very scary

Dear Great Grandchildren,

I am 61 years old and I don’t know whether I will get to meet you or not. I sincerely hope that we do get acquainted.

The world is a very different place for you than it was for me when I entered it in 1959. Back then, cars were not that common and televisions had only just begun to arrive in homes. When I was a girl, there was great excitement when our family got a color TV. I know it’s hard to imagine and what’s more, we only had 3 or 4 channels to choose from and we had to get up from the armchair and press a button on the contraption itself. (I can hear you laughing).

Today, as I write this in the year 2021, Netflix, Amazon Prime and a myriad of other streaming services bring thousands upon thousands of box sets, films, dramas, documentaries, kids’ programmes and whatever our hearts desire into the viewing arena we enjoy each evening, at the flick of a button from our armchairs.

Mobile phones didn’t exist — I know — I would be lost without my Apple iPhone which is a mini-computer much less a phone and I do use a whole host of its capabilities, including sending e-mails, surfing the internet and monitoring my fitness levels, to name but a few, but which will…
