If we don’t offer a livable future for our children, we fail them. If we don’t secure a safe future for our adults, we fail ourselves. And if we fail ourselves, we fail this nation.

A Teacher’s Lament

Our family friend Rose, immigrated to America many moons ago. She retired on the islands and and made her way to Florida where she discovered she needed to keep busy or she’d go stir crazy.

The first job she tried was being a substitute teacher. Late in life, she discovered she loved it enough that she became a full time teacher and she has been teaching for at least a 8 years, working through Covid and up till today.

She called me up to complain about her school kids last night.

“I can’t get them to sit still, Mitch. I can’t get them to read. I can’t get them to do math. I can’t get them to focus. And after Covid, they’re worse — so much worse.”
