Smash Mouth Isn’t Just“The Shrek Band”

One very popular scene from Shrek that everyone seems to know is when we first meet Shrek himself. He whips open the door to his outhouse and we see before us a large, green ogre standing proudly in his swamp. The scene is a classic.

However, I would argue that the song that plays during the scene is more popular. You guessed it: I’m talking about All Star.

Something about the pairing of the scene and the song just feels right. The vocals lead us into the scene and the outhouse door slamming open syncs with the music coming in. The song itself is upbeat and catchy, perfect for an intro track. Everything here seems to fit together very nicely.

It’s no wonder then why this song became so associated with Shrek. It’s hard to even listen to the song and not be reminiscent of watching Shrek go through his morning routine.

One might think this would be a grand achievement for the band who came up with the song. By putting their song in the film, they probably amassed a good amount of money and got a lot of people to look into their music. However, maybe this isn’t the case.

Who Wrote All Star?

Among those around my age, late teens and early 20’s, many of them seem to not even know what band came up with All Star. They’ll easily sing the lyrics…
