Welcome to the ‘Open Source Journal’ where we will feature stories and articles from in and around the open source ecosystem. We will take a look at new and existing technologies, integrations, and also share insights and perhaps try a few proof of concepts along the way!

It’s great to have you here and to kick things off we’d like to introduce you to our authors.

Paul Brebner

Open Source Technology Evangelist

Over the last 6 years, Paul has been learning dozens of new open source technologies, building realistic demo applications, and blogging and speaking about his experiences. He has extensive R&D and consulting experience in distributed systems, technology innovation, software architecture and engineering, software performance and scalability, grid and cloud computing, and data analytics and machine learning. Paul has previously held roles at Waikato University (New Zealand), the University of New South Wales (UNSW, Sydney), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO, Australia), University College London (UCL, UK), National ICT Australia (NICTA), and several tech startups.

Technology Evangelist

John is a Software Engineer with over 15 years experience of developing enterprise software solutions across a variety of languages and technologies. For 6 years he worked as a Lead Engineer and for the last year he has taken on the mantle of Technology Evangelist, specialising in open source technology. In is role, John explores the landscape of open source technologies, investigates and tests new solutions, documents interesting use cases, creates new content to help educate and encourage people to use open source for their business.

Hichem brings more than 10 years in the big data processing domain. Ex Databricks and Sony Playstation, he is currently an Open Source Product Architect working with the product team to prioritise and translate the market and customer needs into new features.

Kassian Wren

Open Source Technology Evangelist

Kassian (they/their/them) has over 10 years experience in software development and 5 years experience in Developer Advocacy. Their interest in the big data space covers Apache Cassandra and Apache Kafka, while their love of learning led them into the Kubernetes and Docker spaces. They like to build IoT projects that showcase big data technologies at the edge. They read, learn and write about technology regularly. When they’re not working on tech they are reading, crafting, or snuggling one of their three cats.
