Our brain exhibits certain “cognitive biases” which can be extremely flawed at times & affect our thinking and actions

There is absolutely no doubt that the brain is a complex organ and a very powerful one at that. Humans have been able to achieve wonderful things utilizing the intelligence locked in this organ. Having said that, nothing in this universe is perfect and neither is our brain. Most of us like to think that we are logical and rational all the time. The reality is anything but that. We are continually under the influence of certain cognitive biases, which distort reality from our perception.

Academics have been studying these biases for decades and the list has grown over the years. Today’s infographic (above) from DesignHacks.co details each of the 188 known confirmation biases in existence. And these biases have become even more important in the information-overloaded world we live in these days.

To err is human, and we can’t possibly evaluate every instance or event which eventually forms our thoughts and opinions about them. It is then that we rely on these irrational mental shortcuts to speed up our ability to make judgments — often leading to certain biases…
