7 Reasons To Race Small

Think Outside The Big Brand Races

When I say small, I am not talking about distance, but more so looking for that non branded race, that low key event in a place no one ever heard of before. Don’t think I am trying to bag the M-Dot or Challenge brands that have the majority of the races out there, they both do an amazing job of putting together so unforgettable events. And to be honest, they make you feel pretty special when you finish them.

But what I am trying to say is, just because the race does not have a big brand behind it, there are still a lot of great reasons to race, and hopefully the following points will help you even choose some of these events through your next years racing schedule.

1. Economic Impact

Although bigger triathlons are used as a draw card for communities around the world, the profits are still going to a multi national company. Smaller races will provide a bigger economic boost to the local community where the races are being held.

2. Get Close To Event Staff

There is a good chance you could be sharing a drink or a meal with race organizers or event staff on the day or in the lead up. I find this to be an awesome way to get the low down on what it actually takes to put together an event. In my experience event staff will welcome questions and if you have the time, role up your sleeves and help out in some way.

3. Lower Race Entry Fee

Generally speaking, there are less overheads so the events can have smaller race fees. Its pretty rare that you will need a qualification spot as well.

4. See Some Interesting Destinations

If you are thinking there are no interesting destinations, well think again, and there are distances to cater for everyone.

5. Smaller Field Means Higher Placing

This may not be something you are interested in but it is always cool to take out or place in your age group. Smaller numbers in the race will give you a clear advantage of getting there.

6. More Relaxed and Easier To Meet People

Don’t get me wrong, the hype and support from a big event can go a long way in getting you over the line, but with a smaller, more community minded race, it simply has a different feel to it. The low key fell and relaxed vibe will give you the chance to meet and speak with a lot more people. It will give the race a lot more meaning due to the connections you make.

7. Be Part Of Something More Than Just a Race

It would have been amazing to have been around in the first few years of Kona, or even be able to tell people Norseman was your first full iron distance triathlon. When you do these types of races, you come away with something more. You feel like you are part of something a lot bigger than a race.
