2024 Wrap-up: Stepping into ODC’s 10th Year
by Natalia Carfi, Executive Director, Open Data Charter
2024 was an intense year, but overall a positive one for the Open Data Charter and our team.
This year, we made significant strides in promoting transparency, accountability, and innovative uses of data across the globe. Through collaborative efforts among governments, civil society, and technology experts, the ODC advanced its mission to create a more open and equitable data ecosystem.
For the first time in its lifetime the Open Data Charter also made its mark by advocating for open data and data rights in global discussions and documents like the Global Digital Compact. Our data governance work was enhanced through collaboration with policymakers when we helped shade light on frameworks that not only enhance data accessibility but also prioritize data privacy and security. This balance is crucial in maintaining public trust and ensuring that open data initiatives can thrive sustainably.
We also had the incredible honour to be part of the SCUPS program, and be part of the mentorship program at the Paris Peace Forum. We participated in events across the globe, like IACC, UNWDF, UNGA, America Abierta, Summit for Democracy, expanding our outreach and collaborative networks.
In 2024, the ODC also emphasized the importance of thematic agendas. For example, in our collaboration with the Organization of American States (OAS), we implemented the Open Data to Combat Corruption Program (PIDA) in the Dominican Republic. We double clicked on our work on climate change and open data, and showcased the Care Indicators globally. We also published research projects on the balance of the Right to Access information and Privacy and worked with partner organizations like Civic Compact or Pollicy.
Capacity building remains one of the most pressing challenges in the open data governance and advocacy space. We conducted various training sessions and resources to equip individuals and organizations with the skills needed to effectively use and implement open data strategies. These efforts aimed to bridge the gap in data literacy, enabling more people to participate in the open data movement.
As we reflect on 2024, the Open Data Charter’s commitment to promoting open data has not only amplified the voices of our communities but it has continued to harness the power of data as a tool for innovation and social change. In 2025, we will celebrate our 10th anniversary and we look forward to unlocking even greater potential for a more transparent and equitable world.
