Our team is creating a modern data discovery platform — Open Data Discovery and our mission is to introduce new features with each release of the platform that help users get the most out of their data. Today I’m happy to share the latest addition to ODD Platform from development team: Term to Term Linking via Description. This new feature is a big step forward in improving how we organize metadata within platform, making it easier to understand and search through.

If you’ve been following the updates on our Medium page, you’ve noticed our commitment to making modern and user friendly tool for exploring large and diverse corporate data. For those who are new, we invite you to join us in discovering the possibilities of proper data discovery and efficient data governance.

Coming back to the new feature introduction: the main idea behind it is to help ODD Platform users connect different pieces of data within platform. We believe it’s crucial for effective data management to understand how different data entities relate to each other. With this feature users can now have clearer picture of their data landscape by easily creating connections between terms. Looking ahead, we believe this will help in creating better knowledge graphs and in building applications like RAG powered ones, that rely heavily on data.

Here are several key features of ODD Platform in this regard, but please note this is not the ultimate list:

While our previous features covered the basics of organizing data, this new addition takes it to a step forward. With the release 0.26.0 you can refernce one term from another in two ways:
1. by adding link without any extra information to explain the link;
2. and with adding an extra context to link.

Linking the term

In the first case they could only see that the terms are connected.

Linked Term

In the second case ODD users can add links directly within the term description. The process is straightforward — just follow the required formatting. By hovering the cursor over an information icon, a highlighting effect is being triggered, illuminating the text format that should be used to link the text to a specified term: [[NamespaceName:TermName]].

Text format for link creation

This functionality not only creates the link between terms but also gives the opportunity to provide an extra information explaining how and why those terms are linked.

This update makes linking terms easier and enhances data comprehension.
After terms are linked successfully, users can see the count of linked terms under the Dictionary tab for each Term:

Count of terms linked to each term

and the list of linked terms for particular Term by navigating to its Linked terms tab:

Summing up

The feature introduced in this blog post represents significant improvement in how our users can understand and manage data within the ODD Platform. By empowering our users to create meaningful connections between different datapoints, we’re making it easier to create comprehensive knowledge graphs and easily understand complex data ecosystems further.

As we continue to develop ODD, we’re committed to giving our users the toolset they need to unlock the full potential of their data. Our main goal is to create modern data discovery tool with exceptional functionality to solve your business problems while also adhering to Data Governance best practices.
