Since we’ve started talking about the idea of “Connected Exploration” we’ve been very careful to explain that it’s not just about what happens online. The internet is the glue — the link that brings all these explorers together — but most of the action takes place offline. One of the most inspiring developments on OpenExplorer has been watching the different expeditions get their whole communities involved.

Here are a few of our favorites…

Little Creek Playlab
The team at Little Creek Playlab is asking some interesting questions about the effects of oyster farming on their local waterways. They’ve also invited everyone to follow along with their build and expedition. It’s quite fun to see the pictures of people of all ages who are taking part!

Marine Archaeology Around Tierra Bomba Island
The island of Tierra Bomba is just off the northern coast of Colombia. It’s home to a whole host of underwater cultural treasures. This expedition is using an OpenROV to engage the community in protecting those treasures by engaging everyone in the process of discovery. And who knows what unexpected mysteries they might find!
