Shipwrecks hold a special place in the hearts of explorers. The ghostly remains tell interesting stories of both history and, now, biology. It’s been said that the deep sea is the largest museum on Earth. The price of admission is the courage to discover.

Exploration of the SS Tahoe

Over the summer, the team went to Lake Tahoe to search for the wreck of the SS Tahoe. Scuttled in 1940 and lying at a depth of over 110 meters, the ship was a great testing ground for controlling an OpenROV from a cabin across the lake. The full story remains to be told.

Cape Paulos Wreck Documentation

The WreckDivers.TV crew has a few expeditions running on OpenExplorer (and many more that they’ve hinted at). This expedition centers around the wrecks that have accumulated around Cape Paulos along the southern coast of Spain.

Sydney Harbor Wreck Search

A key tool for locating wrecks is a side scan sonar. Reading the sonar data is much of an art as it is a science. Scott is a master (as are many other OpenExplorers). His expeditions in and around Sydney Harbor are a wonderful case study in how to conduct a search, and then proceed to investigate interesting targets.
