Last week, OpenLattice had our first hackathon. Our goal was to bring everyone together and implement fresh ideas.

A hackathon was an opportunity for discovery, where teams that have not worked together previously could take on new roles, and break out of a daily rut. And we had many other reasons why we wanted to participate. First, there were projects we knew needed our attention but we haven’t had a chance to finish because there were more pressing things. Second, we wanted to build an MVP application without any disruption.

We were united by one common goal: find ways to help our customers.

Our first Hackathon!

Our Hackathon judge (not a real judge but a police officer…although judges do use our pretrial case management app. ) David Schwindt said it the best:

Projects

Here’s an overview of the topics tackled during the three-day sprint.

  • Tamatoa: We will create a beautifully curated dashboard inspired by Top Utilizers but running across entire datasets. It will include demographic breakdowns, expanded mapping functionality and visualize queries across > 1 association at a time.
  • the EDM visualized: visualize entity data model (EDM) in interactive D3, a web-based visualization library in JS, that would explain the EDM digestibly
  • Red Panda : Offline Pretrial Case Management app
  • Feeds of Strength : Head start on the referral app
  • Gallery Redesign : Redesign the current permission tool to improve overall usability.
  • Fight Entropy : Working on OpenLattice’s internal file/folder organizational system + taking a first pass at standardizing documentation
  • Ktulu: Infrastructure as Code
  • SRaP (Slackbot + Raspberry Pi+ Phillips Hue Light) Integration: Allow employees to use Slackbot to ping the servers. The light will turn green if the servers are up. To see the code, please click here.
Philips Hue turns green when the servers are up!

What we learned

The results were amazing! We produced some cool prototypes. We will definitely have the next one soon!

The team emerged from the 3-day dash energized and ready to continue building the data solutions to empower officers, case managers, addiction professionals, and policymakers.

We are excited to incorporate these successful projects into the OpenLattice Platform and make the tools available to our customers who make a difference every day.

Day 3: Lots of snacks!
Not everything was smooth but we survived!
