I woke up this morning at 4:30 to go and record the dawn chorus near a field with pregnant and mothering ewes. Unfortunately the excessive rain has caused the noise of footsteps to turn into a squelching nightmare and the nearby motorway was busier than i had imagined for a Sunday dawn. In the end i sacked the sound equipment and grabbed the camera, occasionally helping with minor tasks in the lambing process. This is a picture taken with an iPad of a ewe with triplets, one was still in the womb and came out later. I’ll share some pictures when i get the films back from the lab. The sound was disappointing but hopefully I got some nice pictures. Sometimes you just have to accept failure, I suppose, and try again another time.

Heard not seen, a new short audio filmscape about a playground. In Victorian times they used to say that children should be seen and not heard. These days the fear and politics of photographing children have changed in such a way that it’s considered suspicious to photograph them, yet capturing the sound they make is another matter.
