The Hemp, a new path

It was a fresh day of autumn when, Mauro Carboni, the agronomist of Rural Festival, arranged a meeting with the “Hemp Lady”, Miss Franca. We were amazed by how she exposed to us the preciousness of this fabric. She showed us sheets, clothes, bags and accessories all made of Hemp, and everything made more than two centuries ago, perfectly intact and still robust. We already worked with the hemp in the past, but the meeting with Miss Franca confirmed us the extreme quality and durability of this forgotten fiber.

Starting from that day we decided to concentrate our efforts on hemp. We started to make some research about it and we found out that, in Italy, it was the most popular fabric decades ago, before the first world war. The tradition of Hemp were passed by generations because of its employability (this confirmed the age of the objects that Miss Franca showed us). Then it quickly disappeared for obscure reasons, as explained in our “La Canapa” page. We started to understand that we needed to do something serious with Hemp, to take it as our most important commitment.

We decided to bring it back to our days and let people discover again the incredible advantages of Hemp.

In the following months we studied the old fabrics and the various hemp fabrics already on the market, but none of them met our expectation.

We wanted more, we wanted something unique. So we decided to create something ourself.

The beginning was not easy, we spent the first week at the phone, calling many suppliers from every part of Italy, (in fact the entire production chain is almost disappeared today). The phone calls were followed by the business travels, in order to discover if our idea was workable, but also to meet the people that would have followed us in this complicated path. We also wanted to know well our supplier and transmit them our determination in making the best Hemp possibile.

We learned that in order to obtain the best fabric, we have to start from the colour, in fact yarn dyeing is a necessary process in order to give a colour fastness and a unique touch to the fabric. After this first process we had to develop the best structure, weight and the firmness of our fabric: La Canapa. The result was still imperfect, so we guessed many different finishing treatments until we reached the best softness, maintaining all the Hemp quality.

This is how we brought back to life this special fabric, 100% natural material, durable and most suitable for our slogan: Free Range.
