“This is an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime”; says Dr. Gyanendra Lamichhane, a member of the organizing committee. He recently returned back from Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, where a panel of experts had a meeting for this upcoming extravaganza event going to be held in the himalayan region, Nepal in 2018.

“This is like a major festival for Ophthalmologists here in Nepal”

According to Dr Salma KC Rai, “this is like a major festival for ophthalmologists here in Nepal. We have been endlessly putting tremendous efforts and spending so much fund to send our young ophthalmologists to gain such experiences abroad on international conferences. This time, it will rather be the other way round. It’s like playing the world cup in your hometown.”

No wonder, it’s going to be an event that will certainly engage and unite all the ophthalmologists in Nepal. This event will be a milestone that will boost the much awaited scientific environment among Ophthalmologists busy with their clinical activities. This will give them an opportunity to showcase their work, learn from the peers and peek outside the confinement of their clinics.

“Events like these should be highly encouraged and should be acknowledged with much anticipation” says Dr. Nanda Gurung, another member from the organizing committe. She further adds; “Events like this could be on a small or large scale, but the point is about its continuity and the culture it brings along.”

“A huge task is ahead of us and Nepal Ophthalmic Society (NOS) has already taken the responsibility to take the lead; says Dr. Gyanendra Lamichhane. “At this stage, we have called for applications throughout Nepal who are interested to get involved with the team. Those interested have already given their names for the specified tasks like; Conference co-ordinators, organizing secretary, reception, registration committee, scientific committee, trade and exhibition, entertainment and so on so forth. We will short list the names soon and proceed accordingly. We are working on the NOS website and further information will be uploaded and available through the internet soon.”

The spark it has created is already in the air and I guess everyone must be busy with their role as an organizer or preparing their manuscripts. This event has the potential to bring a new wave of scientific discourse in the field of ophthalmology in Nepal.

On behalf of all the ophthalmologists, the OM team would like to congratulate the organizers and wish a grand success of SAARC OPHTHALMOLOGY CONFERENCE — 2018.
