The National Science Foundation is one of the foremost independent federal agencies of the United States working towards scientific advancements. Created in 1950 by Congress, the NSF eyes “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…”, and it has an annual budget of over $8 billion.

In June, the NSF appointed Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan as its 15th Director. The NSF website describes him as a “leader of AI breakthroughs, champion of innovation and inclusivity”. He “holds four patents, has published more than 485 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and has mentored graduate students, post-docs, research engineers and research scientists — more than 150”, according to NSF.
