New Division Lesson Launch

Oppia is excited to announce the Division lesson on Oppia’s Basic Math Classroom! In this lesson, students will take a trip to to the local market and see how division will come in handy. Read on to learn more!

Oppia has just launched the Division lesson on Oppia’s Basic Math Classroom. In this topic, we use an engaging storyline of Nina and her mother visiting the local market to teach students how to use division to split something into parts. After a basic introduction to division through dividing produce into grocery bags, students are introduced to remainders, division with multiples of ten, long-division with single-digit divisors, and multi-digit division.

As an introduction to the concept, the division lesson builds off of the previous multiplication lesson. The lesson visually displays the splitting of everyday grocery items into equal parts at the local market using colorful and engaging graphics. From there, the lesson involves a series of interactive, sequential lessons that build upon each other, all involving the character Nina in day-to-day scenarios, such as visiting a friend’s home or running a fruit juice stand. This relatability in our lessons is key to showing students across the world that the knowledge they are learning is applicable to their own lives, incentivizing them to continue their mathematics education. Hopefully, their ability to translate the knowledge successfully to life will encourage them to pursue further lessons within Oppia and at their school.
