For this volunteer spotlight, we spoke with Funke Olatunbosun about her experience with Oppia as an Outreachy intern in Nigeria.

Funke began her internship this past Fall with an underlying interest in addressing the challenge of access to education in Nigeria. In the months to follow, she worked with the Partnership team at Oppia to increase awareness of E-learning, especially in Nigeria, via non-governmental organization outreach and other initiatives. Through additional collaborations with the Marketing and User Experience teams, Funke helped analyze the outcomes of Oppia lessons and campaigns for a Nigerian audience.

“My priority first and foremost is ensuring that the African and Nigerian audiences are aware of high-quality education through E-learning, with a focus on translating Oppia lessons into Nigeria’s three major languages: Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo,” Funke says.

When recalling highlights of her experience with Oppia so far, Funke points to one statement made by an eight-year-old learner, who participated with the Oppia Lagos State, Nigeria:

“‘Math is very difficult for me, which is why I don’t like it and is why I don’t usually pass it; I will tell my friends about Oppia because I was still able to remember what I learned two days after the first training.’’’

Yet, Funke has hopes of broadening these outcomes further in 2022 and beyond.

“I hope that every child is supported, regardless of their background or lack of knowledge of English, so that they can still have access to quality education,” Funke says. “Every child deserves a space or knowledge of technology through online education, and we hope to reach as many people as possible to assist us in spreading this awareness.”

When she’s not working on these initiatives, Funke loves to cook! Funke also loves adventure, including talking to new people, finding her way around new places, and problem-solving.

We are so thankful for all Funke’s contributions to our organization! For more insight into Funke’s efforts and internship experience, follow along with her blog posts.
