- Decayed tooth becomes a passage for bacteria to reach bone of the jaws where they can set up a cavity filled with pus.
- This pus sometimes comes out through a weak point on the skin. In some cases an artificial opening has to be made to evacuate the pus filled cavity.
- This procedure of making artificial opening over the skin is known as incision and drainage. The opening can be made inside the mouth or outside over the jaws.
- This procedure can be done under local anesthesia and general anesthesia.
