Every year, the world is invited to celebrate the United Nations World Creativity and Innovation Day. This day embraces the idea that innovation is essential for harnessing the economic potential of nations. Today, the world is facing unprecedented crises in health, education, economy and the future of work.

This hackathon is dedicated to collaborating with and encouraging people to creatively use their skills in generating new ideas and solutions for health & well-being, economic growth, decent work and quality education.

I am extremely honored and excited that Oracle Database is a Challenge Sponsor for World Innovation Day hackathon 2023. This year, one of the challenges will be on Oracle’s recently released Database 23c Free — Developer Release, which provides developers a chance to kick the tires for free with innovative 23c features that simplify development before it’s commercially available.

Oracle is committed to using technology to help our communities, whether it is helping to clean up our oceans, or our commitment to achieving a zero-emissions cloud by 2025. We believe that technology can be a force for good and positive change.

This year’s theme is Generative AI, which we can all agree is one of the most exciting developments in technology! AI is helping us to augment the capabilities of differently abled individuals, such as assistance with speech to text for those that are unable to see. AI is helping to advance research in medicine, improve education around the globe, and even help to save the environment. AI can automate complex tasks and perform them even faster and for an extended duration.

If you’re wondering what use cases you can build for an AI future, think about these:

1. Detecting fraud is a 24/7 job and AI can perform this better than humans. AI can find fraud rings that are operating to swindle us out of billions of dollars across all industries, especially in industries such as retail where we share our information and credit card or bank information every time we buy something.

2. AI can help humans get healthier and stay on track with wearables such as Fitbits or Apple Watches. These can help with health metrics, warn you about health anomalies, and if you have chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart conditions, this is a must. AI can even detect things such as cancer, diseases, and ailments.

3. AI also extends to robots and machines to do dangerous work or work that people don’t want to do, such as recyclable sorting, working in hazardous environments with toxic substances, or lifting heavy loads.

Uses of artificial intelligence doesn’t stop there. We can all imagine a future where AI is inserted into every corner of our lives and it’s evidenced in movies such as Her, Ex Machina, i Robot, and my personal favorite, Steven Spielberg’s A.I. about a robot’s desire to become a real boy.

When Alan Turing created his test to determine if a computer was capable of thinking as a human, he may not have imagined a world like this, but I am really excited to be living in an age where the possibilities of automation and sentient beings are closer than ever before.

Good luck on the challenge and we’re excited to see what imaginative solutions you build!
