From gourmet pet food to designer dog duds, pets in 2018 are living their best lives. But one overlooked segment of the pet-pampering industry is travel. More than 40% of Americans planned to take their pets on vacation with them this summer, and pet-friendly hotels beat out Airbnb’s or staying with friends and family. One reason?

VIP hotel “pet-menities.”

In advance of National Spoil Your Dog Day (August 10), Orbitz and Rover.com partnered with spcaLA to treat shelter dogs to a day of 4-star “pet-menities” at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica. The dogs were treated to real amenities such as spa treatments (pawdicures, essential oil massages), gourmet meals (grilled organic salmon, scrambled eggs, steamed brown rice), and leisurely walks along the beach from Rover.com. In addition to pampering these shelter dogs, Orbitz and Rover waived adoption fees for dogs from spcaLA through the weekend. In total, 14 dogs were adopted.

Orbitz has also launched a landing page to make it easy for travelers to browse their pet-friendly portfolio and pet-menities.
