By allowing you to summon a terminal window instantly, the hotkey window feature streamlines your workflow, boosts productivity, and elevates your terminal experience to a whole new level. In this article, we delve into how to enable this wonderful feature. Get ready to take command of your command line like never before!

iTerm2’s hotkey window.

Enabling the hotkey window is simple. From the iTerm2 settings navigate to the Keys tab, Hotkey panel, and choose “Create a Dedicated Hotkey Window…”.

This opens a popover with various configurations for the hotkey window. You have two options to bring up the window; Either a hotkey or a double-tap key. For the hotkey, choose “click to set” and enter the key chord to be used. For the double-tap key, check the box and choose a key from the dropdown. Here you can see that we have enabled the double-tap option with the shift key. We find that it’s right by our pinky and easy to get to without having to move our hands.

So long as iTerm2 is open, you can execute the chosen hotkey and a terminal window will slide down from your systems menu bar. No more needing to open the app switcher or find the icon on your dock! The best part is that you still get all of the conveniences of iTerm2 like split panes, search, and autocomplete.
