Megan Martinez — Style Interview

Name: Megan Martinez
Location: Santa Monica, CA
Profession: Designer, Social Media Consultant
Social Media Handles: @bohobeachbungalow

How would you describe your design style?

I’ve embraced my eclectic side with easy, laid-back living and have tried to incorporate a relaxed, vintage modern, collected feel into the design of our home. I would describe my style as vintage, eclectic, and modern with strong calls of new bohemian and casual beach vibes.

We love your feed on instagram @bohobeachbungalow — Can you tell us about your beach inspired house? Is it actually on the beach?

Our home is a rental that was built in the 1930’s and has retained a lot of its unique features like arched doorways, inset shelving, original hardwood floors, and even a vintage stove! It took us months to find it but it was worth the wait to have a great space with character and charm. It isn’t actually on the beach, but just a few blocks away. We’re so lucky to be able to live in such a great area — that ocean breeze really is essential during hotter months!

Where do you take your design inspiration from? Any specific instagram accounts or blogs you ‘stalk’ for ideas?

It’s everywhere these days. Pinterest, instagram, magazines, and for me especially I love design books. I feel like you can find more unique inspiration in books that may not be as widely consumed as content online. Some of my favorites are Surf Shack, The Kinfolk Home, Styled. I love to follow @jerseyicecreamco, @amberinteriors, @ateliervime, @kate_zim_turpin, @maraserene, and always read Remodelista and Style by Emily Henderson.

What are your favorite trends right now in design? Are there any you’re just over?

I’m loving the use of organic materials, modern abstract art, layered textures and handmade ceramics. I have to say — I’m a bit over the gallery wall these days and prefer large scale artwork instead.

We noticed our Siena 3 pop up throughout your Bungalow. Do you use this piece for function or design? How long have you had it?

I’ve had it for about 3 years now. The best pieces of furniture serve as both form and function — I use it for both! The storage is great — the combo of an open cube as well as drawers makes it super functional, and it looks beautiful too. It’s the best of both worlds!
