Week-4 : Human resource and human relation approach.

Mary Parker Follet, Elton Mayo and Chester Barnard were the people who have laid the foundation of human relations approaches. They also examined the employer-manager relationship in a new way. Follet was a Boston social worker who used her experience of working with vocational guidance centers and it helped her to develop new ideas about leadership and communication. She believed that cooperation among people working under visionary leadership helps to get excellent results in workplace and community. She also emphasized on feminist view of management that helps worker to get empower by sharing information, helping them to solve problems and distributing task among teams. Mayo was a Harvard professor who gave his critique about scientific management. Like Follet, he did not support the idea of wage-maximizing individuals in an organization. Instead he believed in limiting individual rationality and stressed on the importance of interpersonal relations. According to him society comprises of group of people, not individuals. Also individuals should considered group norms and should not do anything for self-interest. Lastly Barnard was a chief executive at Bell Telephone in New Jersey, he got really impressed by Follet and support the importance of cooperation in organizations. According to him individuals should accept a common purpose and follow it that is the key to cooperation. He added that effective managers should strive to communicate with the workers in such a way that he or she can encourage them to work efficiently. Also he valued the contribution of informal communication between manager and employer. For the first time the purpose of management was seen as more interpersonal compare to economic.

Movie was really good a great example of human relation and human resource. There is a scene which I think every human resource department have to face, when HR gives a call to an employee and says that there is no requirement for her and she should leave. After that call employee commits suicide. After that HR boss ask the employee that what she told her that she committed suicide. So this is somewhat a real situation in world. Human resource department have to face such situations once or twice every time. So for avoiding such things, employee should use their communication skills in a better way that does not harm others. Craig tried to take human relation approach to management. According to me he really wanted to work as a team and believe in making connections. He took the relations with employer more seriously than management. It can be seen from above example where he fired Natalie, who he thinks that she was responsible for the suicide of employee. But to be honest I really appreciate the work done by Craig and one should follow him.

In soup Nazi I just understood that George was afraid to face the server or the chef, because of his rude behavior towards him and towards other customers. That’s really not the quality a chef or server should have in real life. He should be humble and greet the customers, as his business runs on customers. But I am really confused about his role of approach. It will be a great discussion topic.
