This isn’t how democracy works.

Stop it.

I didn’t want to get too political in these Chapters, but I’d say the UK voting to leave the EU is a big enough issue that I can dedicate one full post to the discussion (Chapter 40 notwithstanding). Plus, I want to vent some frustration.

Me today.

I’ve seen the abuse a lot of Leave voters have had hurled at them for making the decision to vote out, so I’ll start off by saying that I voted Remain. I wanted to stay in the EU and I wasn’t in a great mood on Friday when I woke up to discover 51.9% of the voting population had demanded the UK go it alone. Not a brilliantly convincing margin of victory, but victory nontheless.

It’s disappointing, but this is how democracy works. You vote, and if not enough of your like-minded peers vote the same way, your side loses. You can’t argue that the final vote wasn’t fair, or stick your head in the sand and pretend democracy didn’t happen.

You certainly can’t demand another referendum just because you didn’t get the result you wanted. That’s not how democracy works.

Us 48.1% who voted Remain, we’re angry. We’re frustrated. We want to be active and fight for our vote. We’re doing what we can.

That’s great, young people are really engaged in politics right now and it’s fantastic. It’s about time. But you’re a couple of days too late, guys. We lost, the majority of the UK voted Leave. If you wanted us to Remain, y’all should’ve voted in bigger numbers on Thursday.

This petition that’s floating around (this one), I’m not happy about it. In fact I hate it. I hate it with a burning passion. At the time of writing, 3.4 million people had put their signatures to this petition. That’s a lot of people, but over 30 million voted in the referendum. 3.4 million hardly scratches the surface.

Plus, you don’t even have to be registered to vote to sign a petition. Who knows how many of that 3.4 million were inactive voters on Thursday. The Government will not hold another referendum just because less than 5% of the total UK population put a few details in to an online form. It’s lazy activism and it won’t do a thing.

Sorry if that stings anyone, but it’s the truth. Unless Parliament throws this referendum result out themselves (which is also unlikely) we’re stuck with the decision of the 51.9%.

So, suck it up and get on with your life. Stop relying so heavily on media outlets for your facts, because there’s too much bias and not enough education there. It would be nice is someone would put the time and effort in to calming everyone down and actually educating the population rather than inciting further division between the Remain and Leave groups, but that’s probably not going to happen.

Make love, not pointless petitions.

Catch you all tomorrow.
