All month, UP is releasing articles and videos to help the Class of 2020 hit the ground running when they move in. Check out our past blog posts here.

Here are 10 things to know about using technology at the University of Portland, courtesy of the Information Services (IS) department:

1. Getting Help

As a new student, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with technology. Luckily, plenty of help is available! The Help Desk and the Residential Computer Consultants (RCCs) are your technology allies at the University of Portland.

· The Help Desk, located in Franz 112, is the first line of defense for computer problems. The friendly staff is happy to answer questions and perform basic computer maintenance. Contact the Help Desk at 503.943.7000 or help@up.edu.

· RCCs are student leaders who live in the residence halls and assist with personal computer problems. These enthusiastic techies bring passion and experience to every issue. Look for the posters in your residence hall to find out the name of your RCC.

2. Campus Computing

Need a computer? University of Portland offers numerous avenues for campus computing. Open computer labs are available in the Clark Library and Shiley Hall. Additionally, every residence hall is equipped with a study room and computers and printers available 24/7. Finally, kiosk computers are located throughout campus hallways and lobbies if you just need to check your email or look up a Moodle assignment.

3. Wireless Access

If you prefer to use your own laptop or wireless device, UP offers high-speed wireless internet throughout all of its buildings and many outdoor spaces. Just connect to the UPStudent wireless network and sign-in with your UP username and password and your device is good to go.

4. Printing

No printer? No problem! All residence halls and computer labs are equipped with network printers and students are allotted $10 in print funds every semester. Black and white prints are 5 cents per side, while color prints are 15 cents per side. You can add extra funds to your print account, just bring your ID card and use the add value machines in the Library or Shiley 208 lab.

Additionally, laptops can print from anywhere thanks to the new Web Print system. Login to http://up.appid.com, click Web Print, select “Submit a Job” and upload your document to the printer nearest to you. More information is available here.

5. Antivirus

To protect your computer and the campus network, it’s necessary to have antivirus software installed on your personal computer. As long as it’s up-to-date, it should work fine for getting connected. If you don’t already have antivirus, you can download Symantec Endpoint Protection for no additional fee here.

6. Single Sign-on

It’s easy to find yourself lost with all the online technology offerings from University of Portland. Luckily, there is one site to connect them all. up.appid.com is UP’s single sign-on solution and allows users to connect to a wealth of online technology. Along with links to email and Pilots, some notable features of http://up.appid.com include:

· Lynda.com — An online learning site with a video library of engaging, top-quality courses taught by recognized industry experts.

· Mediaspace — Host and stream videos or record a screencast directly into the site. Mediaspace is UP’s answer to Youtube and a great resource for hosting your multimedia productions.

7. Self Serve

Looking for a class schedule? Class registration? Tax forms? You can find all of this crucial information in Self Serve Banner. This resource holds personal information, course registration and schedules, financial aid, and employee timecards. Be sure to check out Parent Proxy access. Grant access to a parent (proxy) to view your grades, financial information, health and conduct, and more. Access Self Serve through the SSB link in https://pilots.up.edu

8. Stay Connected with UPmobile!

Did you know that UP has launched its own mobile app? View class schedules, maps, directory, news, events, and more. Learn more at: http://up.edu/mobile

9. Stay Safe with Password Protection

UP takes security very seriously. Because your account contains so much sensitive personal information, it’s important that you protect your password and keep it private.

Additionally, your password is set to expire every 143 days. To make it easier to update this password, you can sign into up.appid.com and verify that an alternative email address or mobile number is on file. Just click the AppID icon and select Options -> Security to set this information.

10. Learn more at the Virtual Service Center

There’s a lot more information out there than what we can fit into one blog post. To learn more about technology at UP, visit the Virtual Service Center. The knowledge base is always being updated with new guides and help sheets.
