To sum up the overarching theme in my project, I made a playlist of a few songs that I like. The first is a song from a DJ who makes electronic music. “Shelter” was written with a music video animated by A-1 Pictures and produced by Crunchyroll. The meaning of the song has much to do with moving forward and carrying on a legacy. The chorus says, “ It’s a long way forward/ So trust in me/ I’ll give them shelter like you’ve done for me”, so from the perspective of the person singing, they are telling whoever came before them that they will follow in their footsteps. In the same way, my brothers and I are able to make lives of our own because our dad worked hard.
The second song is from the popular cartoon series “Adventure Time”. In the story arch “Stakes”, we learn how the character Marceline became an immortal vampire. In the end, she sings the song “Everything Stays” which her mother used to sing to her when she was very young. I thought that the lyrics of the song matched the theme of how history likes to repeat itself from my annotated bibliography. I also like how it sounds like a lullaby which sound timeless and people tend to remember them fondly.
The next two are from anime that I have seen. I decided to share English covers of them to make it easier for the viewer to understand the meaning of the songs. “Again” is the first opening song to the anime “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood”. The show, to put it very simply, is about two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, searching for the Philosopher’s Stone in a world where alchemy persisted in the military instead of machines. The meaning of the song is pretty straight forward when the lyrics are in English: no matter what we go through, we need to press on to achieve our dreams.
The last song “World End” may seem to have depressing lyrics, but they’re more triumphant than mournful. In the anime “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion”, a high-class student named Lelouch seeks to change the world and take down the western Holy Britannian Empire. The song is the last opening of the second season “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2”. The song says things like “It’s time to let my shattered dreams/ Become this world’s reality/ It’s the end for me” because the singer is making their dreams come true and have nothing more to do. Given the placement of the song in the show, Lelouch must have achieved his goal by the end of the series. I feel that my dad has achieved his goal and now waits for my brothers and I to achieve ours as well.
