Now Optimized for Mobile: Origin Launches a Fresh New App And Sponsored Gas
Our mission at Origin is to enable true peer-to-peer commerce. Since we began our ambitious quest to enable many different marketplaces across the global sharing economy, we’ve rapidly built our technology platform to support many use cases, from home-sharing and contractor services to e-commerce.
Today, we are proud to announce that we’ve completely re-architected our mobile apps to better serve our global users, especially those who don’t have desktop computers. Our goal is to build simple and easy to use tools, even for those who are still learning about blockchain technology, cryptocurrency, and decentralized apps. These first applications built on top of the broader Origin platform will also serve as references for our developer and marketplace partners as they look to build their own DApps in the coming months.
This is the third major release of our mobile experience, and we can’t wait for our global community to try the new apps. While going through the first few iterations of engineering the Origin platform, we have faced many technology and infrastructure challenges, such as Ethereum being slow and not yet scalable. We’ve also encountered countless other user experience challenges, with many users complaining about the pains of using Metamask and others lamenting that they shouldn’t have to pay for Ethereum gas to perform simple interactions like updating their profiles or writing reviews.
At the end of the day, end-users will only use Origin-enabled DApps if they are just as easy to use as existing centralized apps AND they add significant additional value (e.g. reduced fees, censorship-resistance, painless permissionless payments for the unbanked, and opportunities to be part-owners of the network). Our developer partners will only be successful if their Origin-powered applications are similarly easy to use by their end-users.
Today, we believe we are getting closer than ever to bridging the gap between centralized applications and tomorrow’s DApps. While Origin still requires users to have some basic understanding of cryptocurrency, we’ve made the entire experience much more streamlined for new users just getting their feet wet with DApps.
Today’s launch has several major components:
- Sponsored gas where we cover the gas costs for you to use Origin
- A revamped profile and onboarding flow
- A complete mobile-first re-design
- An improved experience for Origin Rewards, our incentive program that rewards users with Origin Tokens (OGN) for promoting the health and growth of the network.
One of the most important improvements we’ve added to our DApp is sponsored gas. In previous versions, users were required to pay Ethereum gas for various types of blockchain transactions like creating listings, updating profiles, and writing reviews. This is something we’ve always sought to improve since day one. We believe that by streamlining the user experience and removing some of the friction points of blockchain technology we can begin to appeal to mainstream users that are accustomed to highly refined user experiences. A few years from now, end-users using Origin-powered DApps should have to know very little about blockchain and cryptocurrency. They instead will just know they can buy and sell freely, with zero or low transaction fees, all the while earning Origin Tokens (OGN) for helping build out the network.
While we appreciate the importance of gas in preventing abuse on the Ethereum network, requiring gas added a challenging friction point in our previous versions and, specifically in the case of the listing creation workflow, created a barrier for new sellers by requiring them to have funded wallets before creating their first listings.
Sponsored gas creates a much more streamlined experience in multiple workflows across our mobile apps and, in so doing, paves the way towards increased adoption by mainstream users.
Profiles, reviews, offer acceptance are all free. Behind the scenes, we are using meta-transactions to make this possible. With meta-transactions, users can sign transactions with their wallets then pass them to our relayer to publish them and pay the gas costs. We’ll be publishing a more technical writeup of how it all works in the next week.
New Onboarding & Profiles
Another important update to our DApp is our much-improved onboarding experience. We’ve added biometrics and seed phrases as an additional security layer to keep your funds safe. We’re also introducing the option to sign up for Origin Rewards as part of our long term goal of having as many users as possible become stakeholders in the Origin network. This, combined with some other updates we had introduced previously, will now allow buyers and sellers to have a much smoother initial experience so they can easily begin transacting on our marketplace.
We’ve also redesigned our profiles with a mobile-first approach, removing unnecessary elements and thereby reducing clutter on the screen. We’re offering additional verifications to allow buyers and sellers to further strengthen their identities and earn rewards by doing so.
The majority of our traffic comes from mobile devices. As part of our efforts to move away from a reliance on MetaMask, we’re shifting our focus to mobile devices as the primary medium in which to experience our DApp. Internally, we have started to prioritize making things work on our own iOS and Android apps first. Second, we want to make sure our marketplace continues to work smoothly for users who choose to use other mobile wallets like Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet, or imToken. To ensure that we are building a decentralized platform that supports many DApps and gives users control over their identities and cryptocurrency funds, the Origin experience is still fully compatible with dozens of third-party wallets, including desktop support for users who have a web3-enabled browser.
To celebrate the relaunch of our marketplace, we’ve secured a new domain for experiencing our marketplace on the web, both on desktop and in third-party mobile wallets. Visit us today at shoporigin.com!
Last but not least, we’ve redesigned the interface for Origin Rewards, and we’ve added more ways for buyers and sellers to earn Origin Tokens (OGN) on our DApp.
As we continue to build out our platform and community of developers, marketplace operators, and users, we’re excited to continue bringing you consistent and frequent product improvements.
Look forward to additional updates in the near future, but for now, download the iOS and Android apps today and begin using the brand new Origin experience! If you have previously used a different Ethereum wallet, check out this step-by-step guide for migrating from MetaMask to Origin. We can’t wait to hear your feedback.
